But if you head just south of the Metra train station in Winfield, there is a vibrant little family-owned shop changing that story one scoop at a time.
Welcome to Winfield Creamery. Located at 27W460 Beecher Ave. (Suite E), this small-batch ice cream parlor has quickly turned into the heart of the local neighborhood for families across Winfield, Warrenville, West Chicago, and Wheaton.
How a Summer Walk Turned into a Dream
The shop started with a simple stroll. Co-owner Katrina Muenster was walking through downtown Winfield with her kids on a warm afternoon when she noticed something missing. There was no walkable, nostalgic spot where neighbors could naturally bump into each other and hang out.
"Growing up, my mom always took me and my brother to Wisconsin Dells, and we would go into all the small shops where everything was small-batch and local," Katrina recalls. "I was like, how great would it be to have a taste of that in Winfield? It kind of feels like you're on vacation."
Turning that vision into reality was terrifying. Katrina works as a licensed counselor, and her husband David is a local high school teacher and football coach. Add an elementary school student, a toddler, and a newborn baby to the mix, and taking on retail construction felt nearly impossible. There were contractor delays, financial stress, and plenty of tearful nights where Katrina wondered if they should give up.
"Starting off, we didn’t realize how demanding it would be," Katrina shares. "I think that there's a lot of moments that you'll look back on and think, 'That was the point that was going to break me.' And then to look back and say, 'But I'm still here, it didn't break me.' You can't let fear be the primary voice you lean into, because you have to take a little bit of risk to see any kind of reward."
They pushed through anyway, relying on faith, grit, and David’s coaching mindset. Looking around the cozy shop now, David laughs when he remembers how bare bones the empty storefront used to be. "There was nothing," David says. "To now we're sitting here talking with you and like, there's actually things!"

Step Inside the Vibe
You can feel the personal touch the second you walk through the door. Katrina used her counseling background to lay out a space where people actually look up and talk to each other instead of staring at their phones. There are cheerful pastel colors, sprinkle-patterned walls, bright yellow chairs, and a cozy book nook for kids. Even the logo has a personal story. David sketched the original concept on a paper napkin at their kitchen table, and his cousin, a tattoo artist, brought it to life.
For Katrina, every design detail comes back to one simple goal of bringing people together. "I say for me, community means a sense of belonging," Katrina explains. "Like a place to be where you feel welcomed and invited, and just a space where you can be you."
Thoughtful touches like this little library make Winfield Creamery a welcoming, stay-and-play spot for neighborhood families.
Flavors Worth the Trip
Then, of course, there is the ice cream. Katrina fell in love with an exceptionally dense, creamy brand out of Michigan (Ashby's Sterling Ice Cream), and the community has been hooked ever since. "They really take time in mastering the flavor and the creaminess of their ice cream," David notes.
The creamery serves 24 rotating small-batch flavors, and popular tubs sell out in record time. A few fan favorites you have to try:
Michigan Pothole – Thick fudge layers swirled into a deep chocolate base (it makes a legendary milkshake!)
Bake Shop – Rich cake batter loaded with chunks of real baked treats
Cool Mint Cookie – Crisp mint filled with real chocolate cookie pieces
Cow Tippin' – Creamy vanilla laced with rich caramel ribbons
Eskimo Kisses – A coconut and chocolate treat (David routinely wins over skeptical customers with this)
A peek into the dipping cabinet reveals tubs of some of the favorite, freshly churned flavors awaiting your next cone or milkshake.
"Every time people ask for Eskimo Kisses, they think it’s something else," David explains. "I’m like, it does have coconut, and they say, ‘Oh, thank you for telling me, I don’t like coconut.’ But when you taste it, you don’t really taste the coconut. So, then I end up scooping it for them, and it ends up being one of their favorite ones." As Katrina points out, "It surprises you."
