Main Street is closed to cars this weekend for Oktoberfest, running Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19, sponsored by the District 58 Education Foundation. Walk two blocks west to Warren Avenue and you will pass a construction fence that has been part of the scenery since 2019. Both of those things are true in downtown Downers Grove at the same time, and together they explain something the "look at all these new restaurants" posts have been missing all fall. Three restaurants are coming. They are not the same kind of story.
One is a name change on a street that already does this well. The other is new square footage on a street that has been waiting seven years for someone to build something on it.
Main Street Is Trading One Name for Another
Ranalli's Pizza Bar is taking over 5200 Main Street, at the corner of Grove and Main, in the building that spent years as Emmett's. The pizzeria is owned by Four Corners Restaurant Group, the Chicago hospitality company behind Gaslight, Benchmark, and Federales Tequila & Tacos. After more than 40 years operating in the city, this will be Ranalli's first suburban location, and the company has said it plans to open this fall.
That is a real addition to the neighborhood's dining options. It is also, geographically, a swap. The address already had a full-service restaurant in it. Downtown loses a longtime tenant and gains a Chicago group's first bet on the suburbs, in the exact same footprint. Nothing about downtown's dining capacity actually grows here. What changes is who is behind the bar and what is on the menu, tavern-style thin-crust and pan pizzas in place of whatever came before.
That is worth knowing if you have watched other Main Street storefronts turn over the past few years. This is the same pattern, just with a bigger name attached to it.
Warren Avenue Is Starting From an Empty Lot
The Rec League is a different kind of project. The address is 844 Warren Avenue, and before this year that lot sat vacant. A planned unit development had actually been approved there back in 2019, but that earlier restaurant project never got built, and the site sat empty until The Rec League, from the team behind Cadence Kitchen and The Foxtail, broke ground.
Village zoning documents describe a two-story building of more than 20,000 square feet, with a dining room and bar on the first floor that opens onto a heated patio with a fire pit, and golf simulators, darts, and billiards on the second. The exterior is wood timber and stone, described in the planned unit development application as a California mountain look, a departure from the brick storefronts a block away on Main.
As of this month, The Rec League has filed for its liquor license, a sign that its target opening later this year is getting close. When the Downers Grove Planning and Zoning Commission first reviewed the project, Commissioner Michael Davenport called it a "good compliment to the Tivoli," the Classic Cinemas theater that already anchors that end of downtown, and floated the idea that it could work as a "catalyst" for the area to grow into more of an entertainment district stretching east toward Fairview Avenue.
That is a specific, on-the-record prediction from a village official, and it points at something bigger than one restaurant. Warren Avenue isn't picking up a tenant that already existed somewhere else downtown. It's adding a building, and a use, that didn't exist there before.
Where Fonda de Paula Fits
The third piece of this fall's lineup is Fonda de Paula, bringing traditional Mexican fare to downtown. It's a smaller story than the other two in terms of what's publicly documented, but it adds a third distinct cuisine to a downtown that already leans heavily Italian and American tavern fare, and it means the fall openings aren't just duplicating what's already on the block.

Main Street Keeps the Festivals. Warren Avenue Is Getting the Nightlife.
This split matters for how downtown actually functions this fall, not just for who's cooking what.
The 49th Annual Fine Arts Festival just wrapped on September 12 and 13, with roughly 50 to 60 juried artists set up along Main Street, the same stretch where Ranalli's will open. The Downtown Market runs every Saturday through October 17 on that same corridor. The Fall Scavenger Hunt runs October 1 through 23. Main Street is, and has been for decades, the street that hosts downtown's public events. A pizzeria trading places with a longtime tenant doesn't change that role. It just changes what's open when the festival crowd wants a slice afterward.
Warren Avenue has never had that job. What it's getting instead, with a two-story building, a patio fire pit, and golf simulators next to an existing movie theater, looks more like a nightlife extension than a festival street. If Commissioner Davenport's prediction holds and the corridor does grow east toward Fairview, downtown's usable footprint gets bigger for the first time in a while, rather than just recycling the same storefronts with new names on the awnings.
That's the piece worth carrying into how you plan an evening out this fall. If you want the market, the art fair energy, the walkable Main Street scene, that's still centered where it's always been. If you want something closer to a night built around darts and a fire pit after a movie at the Tivoli, that's a newer, separate pull a couple of blocks over on Warren.
What to Watch For
None of these three are open yet as of this month. Ranalli's is working toward a fall target. The Rec League's liquor license filing suggests its late-2026 opening is close but not locked to a specific date. Fonda de Paula's timeline is the least documented of the three. The honest answer, if you're planning a birthday dinner or just want to know when to start checking, is that downtown's fall restaurant wave is a few weeks or months out, not a this-weekend thing.
What is a this-weekend thing is Oktoberfest, happening right now on Main Street. The market keeps running on Saturdays through mid-October. The scavenger hunt starts in a couple of weeks. Downtown doesn't need three new restaurants to be worth a walk through this fall. It's already busy. What's changing is what that walk looks like a few months from now, and which street you'll end up on depending on what kind of evening you're after.
