Familiar Names Across La Grange Park’s Fall Events

Look at La Grange Park's fall calendar and it reads like three separate seasons of programming: a chili competition, a custard fundraiser, a Halloween trolley crawl. Different nights, different reasons to leave the house, different flyers taped to the same bulletin boards around town.

Several familiar businesses appear in more than one part of the fall calendar: Andy's Frozen Custard supplied dessert at the Chili Cook-Off and hosts Custard with a Cop, while the La Grange Park Antique Mall ran the cook-off raffle and is among the Haunted Trolley stops. The calendar also features Hop District Community Brewing Co. and the Public Library.

Two nights, one custard stand

Start with the back-to-back opener. On September 17, the Chili Cook-Off returns to Memorial Park for its fourth year, a partnership between the Chamber of Commerce and the Community Park District, with $5 admission and chili from a rotating lineup of local cooks. Last year's version drew eleven competing chefs, and the sponsor list is worth remembering because it tends to repeat: Hop District poured its Oktoberfest release, Andy's Frozen Custard supplied dessert, Phillip's Flowers & Gifts and the La Grange Park Public Library ran kids' crafts, and the La Grange Park Antique Mall ran the 50/50 raffle.

The next night, September 18, Andy's hosts its own event, Custard with a Cop, where the same custard stand that supplied dessert for the chili crowd the night before turns its parking lot over to a meet-and-greet with local police. Two nights, two different hosts on paper, but the same storefront doing double duty in twenty-four hours. That puts Andy's in two roles on consecutive nights: supplying dessert for the cook-off and hosting Custard with a Cop.

The trolley that keeps circling the same blocks

October brings the Haunted Trolley, the Chamber's long-running trick-or-treat crawl where a handful of trolleys loop continuously between stops so families can hop on, get candy at a business, and hop back on. As of this writing the Chamber has not yet locked the 2026 date, but the format hasn't changed in years: multiple trolleys running a fixed loop, with the La Grange Park Antique Mall and the 31st Street Plaza among the regular stops. Last year's edition ran on a late-October Friday afternoon, staying open until early evening so families had a window after school and before dinner.

What's worth noticing is where the loop goes. It doesn't sprawl across the village. It runs the same short stretch of 31st Street that hosts the Antique Mall, Happier Now Cafe & Market, Hop District, and Posto 31. The trolley isn't inventing a route through La Grange Park's business district. It's tracing the one that already exists.

The 31st Street corridor

That 31st Street stretch is doing a lot of the work here. Hop District Community Brewing Co. sits at 23 E. 31st Street, opened by Jim Koblish and his wife Shayne Hansen with an explicit goal of building a taproom for neighbors rather than a destination bar. A few doors down, Posto 31 anchors 1017 E. 31st Street as a dinner spot regulars treat as a standing weekly reservation. Happier Now Cafe & Market runs its own small-business pop-ups off the same corridor. None of these are large operations.

Zip Code Day in June

Some familiar names from the fall calendar also appeared in June. On June 5, 2026, the date matched La Grange Park's own zip code, 60526, and the village turned it into a full day of programming: a community walk ending at Panera Bread or Jimmy's, a Garden Club planting session at Memorial Park, a passport game across the parks, and an evening of live music at the Memorial Park amphitheater. Governor JB Pritzker issued a proclamation recognizing the date statewide. The event's sponsor list read almost like a rerun of the fall calendar: La Grange Art League, Central Federal Savings, Happier Now Cafe and Market, the La Grange Park Public Library, and Hop District Community Brewing Co.

What to actually do with this

If you're new to town or just haven't paid attention to the pattern before, a few practical notes:

1. Bring cash to the Chili Cook-Off. Admission is $5 and the 50/50 raffle at the Antique Mall's table runs on cash, not cards.
2. Don't skip Custard with a Cop because you already did chili night. It's a different crowd, mostly families with younger kids, and it runs the evening right after.
3. Watch the Chamber's page for the Haunted Trolley date once it posts. The route has stayed consistent even when the exact Friday shifts year to year, so once you know one year's stops you basically know the next.
4. If a business on 31st Street looks unfamiliar, it's worth a visit before the season gets busy. Hop District, Posto 31, and Happier Now Cafe & Market are among the businesses along the corridor.
