The Tully Team Local Business Spotlight: Rosie’s Home Cookin’ in Naperville

Lynn Lowder, co-founder of Rosie’s Home Cookin’, built something far bigger than a restaurant.

By Faith Rosenshein Young | The Tully Team at Platinum Partners Realtors

There’s something happening inside Rosie’s Home Cookin’, a local favorite restaurant in Naperville, that goes beyond the food.

And the food is very good.

But what truly sets this place apart isn’t just what comes out of the kitchen. It’s what happens among the people inside it, and why places like this matter so much to the Naperville and DuPage County communities.

I recently sat down with Lynn Lowder at Rosie’s new location in CityGate Centre in Naperville, and what I expected to be a straightforward small business spotlight turned into something much more layered. His story, the mission behind the restaurant, and the role it plays in the community all connect in a way that reflects what so many people are looking for when they think about living in Naperville and throughout DuPage County.

A Life That Led to Rosie’s Home Cookin’

Before opening one of the most talked-about breakfast and lunch spots in Naperville, Lynn Lowder had already lived several lives.

He grew up in a small town in downstate Illinois, attended Northern Illinois University, and enlisted in the Marine Corps during Vietnam. He spent 15 years in the Marines, eventually becoming a JAG officer. After his military career, he worked as a trial lawyer, corporate counsel, and business executive.

Then, in his mid-70s, he did something he had always wanted to do. He opened his first restaurant.  As Lynn puts it, “It’s never too late. If you’ve got something you want to do, you can do it.”

But this wasn’t just about opening a restaurant. It was about fulfilling a purpose.

More Than a Restaurant in Naperville

Rosie’s Home Cookin’ is more than a place to grab breakfast in Naperville. It’s part of something much bigger.

Every dollar of profit supports the Veteran Business Project, a nonprofit Lynn co-founded to help veterans transition into business ownership and rediscover purpose after military service.

Through that work, he saw a pattern.  “They’re looking for that higher calling… they’re missing it. They want it. They need it,” Lynn explains.

For many veterans, the challenge isn’t employment. It’s meaning.  Through the Veteran Business Project, veterans are given the opportunity to:

       Buy existing businesses

       Build new businesses

       Receive mentorship and support

       Reconnect with purpose

Rosie’s serves as both a funding source and a real-world example of what that path can look like.

A Move Within Naperville That Strengthened the Business

Rosie’s originally operated on Ogden Avenue in Naperville, where it quickly became a local favorite. But when a new landlord significantly increased the rent, the restaurant was forced to relocate.

“They decided they were going to make some rent changes… and we had to move,” Lynn shares.

What could have ended the business instead led to a new opportunity.  Through strong community connections, Lynn was introduced to leadership at CityGate Centre. The move came together quickly, and Rosie’s reopened in a new, more prominent location.

The new space is larger and more visible, but the experience remains the same. That consistency is part of what keeps people coming back.

March 11 Ribbon Cutting: A Community Showing Up

Rosie’s celebrated its reopening in Naperville with a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 11, and the turnout spoke volumes.

“There was so much happiness and goodwill… it was extremely moving," Lynn recalls.

The restaurant was packed, with people spilling outside.  It wasn’t just a grand reopening. It felt like the Naperville community showing up to support something meaningful.

A True Small Town Diner Feel in Naperville

Despite being located in a growing suburban city, Rosie’s feels like something different.

“We’re a small town diner, and I’m just a small town guy,” Lynn says.

That philosophy comes from Lynn’s upbringing, where diners were more than restaurants.  “They were the center of the community… you were never a stranger," he shares.

That same feeling exists here.

Personal Connection That You Don’t Find Everywhere

One of the reasons Rosie’s stands out among Naperville restaurants is the personal experience. Lynn is present. He’s talking with customers, learning their stories, and building relationships.  “I’m just being me,” Lynn says.

And that authenticity has created something rare.

Lynn explains, “We’ve had customers become friends with other customers… it becomes very personal.”

This is what transforms a restaurant into a community space.

The Missing Man Table: A Quiet but Powerful Reminder

Inside Rosie’s, there is a detail that carries deep meaning: The Missing Man Table.

It is set but intentionally left empty to honor prisoners of war and those missing in action. It’s simple, but it carries weight.

Lynn shared that from time to time, he notices small mementos left behind, quiet tributes from guests who feel connected to the mission.

In a restaurant rooted in supporting veterans, it serves as a constant reminder of why the mission matters.

A Naperville Restaurant That Delivers on Quality

Of course, none of this matters without great food.  And Rosie’s delivers.

From classic breakfast dishes to standout options like their gluten-free amaranth pancakes and waffles, there is a clear focus on quality and consistency.

“We don’t step on the ingredients… I pay the bills. I know what that bacon costs. It better be good,” stresses Lynn.

And it is.

Why Places Like This Matter When Choosing Where to Live

When people think about moving to Naperville or other communities in DuPage County, they often focus on homes, schools, and property values.

But what truly defines a community is the lifestyle.

It’s where you go on a Saturday morning.
It’s who greets you when you walk in.
It’s the places where connections happen naturally.

Rosie’s is one of those places.

A Simple Measure of a Life

Toward the end of our conversation, Lynn said something that stayed with me:

“Your legacy is, who did you help?”

That idea is woven into everything happening at Rosie’s Home Cookin’ in Naperville.
